The Inner Court: What Leaders Can Learn from the Silence Before the Serve
Aug 07, 2025I’ve coached tennis players in moments when everything was on the line—match point, the crowd holding its breath, the body ready to explode into action.
And I’ve coached leaders in moments just as high-stakes—before a presentation that could shift their career, in the middle of a negotiation that could change their company’s future.
Here’s the thing:
In both worlds, the outcome is shaped long before the ball is struck or the words are spoken.
We spend so much time on the outer game—in tennis, the grip, the footwork, the strategy. In leadership, the plans, the data, the talking points. These are essential. But there’s another arena, one far more powerful: the inner court.
The inner court is the space between stimulus and response. It’s the moment before action when your thoughts, emotions, and intentions align—or scatter.
Why the Inner Court Decides the Match
When a player steps up to serve, what’s in their mind? Fear of missing? The memory of the last double fault? Or are they fully here—clear, calm, intentional?
Leaders face the same invisible battle. You can walk into a room with the best strategy in the world, but if you’re serving from tension, doubt, or distraction, people feel it.
The inner court is where your leadership presence is forged.
How to Train Your Inner Court
-
Pause Before You Play
Just as a tennis player bounces the ball before serving, create a short, intentional pause before speaking or deciding. This pause is your reset button. -
Name Your Serve
Ask yourself: What am I serving right now? Confidence? Clarity? Or maybe fear? The answer will shape your delivery. -
Visualize the Win
See the successful outcome before you start. This isn’t fantasy—it’s mental rehearsal, the same tool champions use before match point.
From the Court to the Boardroom
Champions don’t just train their bodies—they train their inner state. Leaders must do the same. The scoreboard of leadership may not show “15–love,” but it does reveal whether you’re leading from alignment or from chaos.
The inner court is yours to master. Step into it with intention, and you’ll find that the quality of your presence transforms the quality of your results.
