The Weight They Carry
Apr 05, 2026I see it more and more.
Young players walking onto the court already carrying a burden that is not theirs.
-
I need to win.
-
I need to be great.
-
I need to make my parents proud.
-
I cannot fail.
🎯 Before they even play a point, they are already defending something.
Not their game… but their image.
The Trap of External Measurement
Many kids today grow up measuring themselves through:
-
Rankings
-
Results
-
Recognition
-
Approval
On the surface, this looks like ambition.
But underneath, it often hides something deeper:
💡 Fear of not being enough.
When performance becomes identity, every match becomes a judgment of self-worth.
-
A loss feels like failure as a person
-
A mistake feels like exposure
-
Pressure becomes constant, not occasional
And slowly, the game stops being a place of expression…
and becomes a place of evaluation.
The Cost: A Heavy Inner Load
This way of relating to performance creates tension in both mind and body:
-
Tight decisions
-
Fearful execution
-
Emotional instability
-
Loss of joy
But more importantly:
❗ They stop listening to themselves.
Their attention shifts outward:
-
What will others think?
-
Am I doing it right?
-
Is this good enough?
And they lose connection with their inner compass — the place where clarity, intuition, and freedom live.
Returning to the Inner Court
Real development begins when the player reconnects inward.
Not ignoring results… but not being defined by them.
In this approach, we guide players to:
-
Feel before they react
-
Breathe before they act
-
Observe without judgment
-
Compete without carrying identity on the line
🎯 The goal is simple:
To move from playing to prove… to playing to express.
A Different Definition of Success
Success is not:
-
Being perfect
-
Always winning
-
Never disappointing
Success is:
-
Showing up fully
-
Giving your effort honestly
-
Staying connected to yourself under pressure
✅ When a player learns to do this, something powerful happens:
-
Pressure becomes manageable
-
Performance becomes more natural
-
Growth becomes sustainable
And most importantly…
They start to enjoy the game again.
Final Thought
As coaches, parents, and mentors, we must be careful:
Not to add weight… but to remove it.
Because a child who feels free inside:
-
Learns faster
-
Competes better
-
Grows stronger
💡 And perhaps the most important question we can ask is:
Are we helping them become someone…
or helping them become themselves?
Don't miss a beat!
